How to install wired meters?

Wired meters are electrical measurement devices designed to control and monitor energy consumption. They are a fundamental tool for managing energy use, allowing for dynamic power control to be performed correctly, thereby optimising energy use and reducing costs.

The installation of these wired meters is relatively straightforward and provides essential data for the efficient analysis and management of electrical energy. In this section, we will guide you through the process of integrating these devices into the energy system that powers your e-Charger so that you can optimally install wired meters from renowned brands such as Carlo Gavazzi, Chint, Eastron, or Phoenix Contact in your energy system.

Unlike WiFi meters, these devices do not allow for the visualization of solar generation in V2C Cloud. However, all energy/charging modes for your electric vehicle will function correctly.

The installation must be carried out by competent and qualified technical personnel, who are fully responsible for complying with the existing installation provisions and standards.

General arrangement of wired meters

This is the general diagram for understanding the correct placement of the meter within the energy system. If your installation has a different arrangement from the one shown in this diagram, it is advisable to consult the installation diagrams to correctly place the meter within the energy system.

General communication diagram of wired meters

Below is the general diagram for the communication between any of the meters and the e-Charger.

Pin 4 of the RJ-45 connector to terminal B- of the meter’s RS485.
Pin 5 of the RJ-45 connector to terminal A+ of the meter’s RS485.

For some meters that indicate the communication terminal B as positive (B+) and terminal A as negative (A-), to connect correctly, you should connect pin 4 of the Trydan RJ-45 connector to terminal A- and pin 5 of the Trydan RJ-45 connector to terminal B+ of the meter.

Wiring diagrams of wired meters

Carlo Gavazzi

How to install the Carlo Gavazzi meter
e-Charger control board
Modbus connection input – UTP
Meter
Steps for Installation
  1. Connect the 3 current clamps to their respective ports according to the diagram.
  2. Power the meter with the neutral and corresponding phases at the terminals on the top.
  3. You only need two cable wires to establish communication between the meter and the e-Charger. The wire from pin 4 of the charger’s RJ-45 should be connected to terminal 12 (A-), and the wire from pin 5 should be connected to terminal 11 (B+).

NOTE: It is important that the loose UTP wires are isolated (properly crimped) and do not make contact with each other.

Chint

Steps for Installation
  1. Connect the neutral wire to terminal 4 and the phase wire to terminal 3.
  2. Connect the white wire of the current clamp to terminal 5 and the black wire to terminal 6.
  3. You only need two cable wires to establish communication between the meter and the e-Charger. The wire from pin 4 of the charger’s RJ-45 should be connected to terminal 25 (B-), and the wire from pin 5 should be connected to terminal 24 (A+).

NOTE: It is important that the loose UTP wires are isolated (properly crimped) and do not make contact with each other.

Eastron

Steps for Installation
  1. Connect the neutral wire to terminal 3 and the phase wire to terminal 4.
  2. Connect the white wire of the current clamp to terminal 1 and the black wire to terminal 2.
  3. You need two cable wires to establish communication between the meter and the e-Charger. The wire from pin 4 of the charger’s RJ-45 should be connected to terminal 9 (B-), and the wire from pin 5 should be connected to terminal 10 (A+).

NOTE: It is important that the loose UTP wires are isolated (properly crimped) and do not make contact with each other.

Meter
Steps for Installation
  1. The device is equipped with 3 current clamps that you should connect to their respective ports according to the diagram.
  2. Power the meter with the neutral and corresponding phases at the terminals on the top. It is mandatory to power the LA with phase number 1 and the NA with the neutral to supply current to the meter.
  3. Connect the meter to the charger’s control board using a UTP cable with just two wires. The wire from pin 4 of the charger’s RJ-45 should be connected to terminal 13 (B-), and the wire from pin 5 should be connected to terminal 14 (A+).

NOTE: It is important that the loose UTP wires are isolated (properly crimped) and do not make contact with each other.

Phoenix Contact

How to Install the Phoenix Contact Meter

Modbus connection input – UTP
Meter
Steps for Installation
  1. Connect the neutral and phases from the main supply to the terminals at the top.
  2. Connect the neutral and phases going to the house to the terminals at the bottom.
  3. You only need two cable wires to establish communication between the meter and the e-Charger. The wire from pin 4 of the charger’s RJ-45 should be connected to terminal B-, and the wire from pin 5 should be connected to terminal A+.

NOTE: This meter operates directly and therefore does not use current clamps. It is important that the loose UTP wires are isolated (properly crimped) and do not make contact with each other.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The wired meters used for dynamic power control must be used exclusively for this purpose. To install these meters, follow the wiring diagrams or instructions as shown in each device’s manual.

If you already have a meter, ensure it is configured with the protocol type ‘Modbus’, baud rate ‘9600’, and communication address ‘1’.

Configuration of wired meters in the V2C Cloud App

Once the corresponding meter is installed and configured, it is mandatory to optimally configure the dynamic power control. Without this step, the e-Charger will not be able to automatically and dynamically allocate energy surplus to the electric vehicle charging.

You can configure it via Bluetooth or WiFi (if this connection is available). Access the V2C Cloud application from your computer or smartphone, log in with your user credentials, and configure the dynamic power control on the e-Charger.

Enter the configuration menu of the chosen e-Charger and select ‘dynamic power control’.

Select ‘meter’ as the device type and choose the installed meter in the ‘meter type’ option. For the specific case of the Chint meter, you must enter the COM address of your device.

Finally, choose the type of installation you have. Don’t forget to save the changes to ensure the modifications are recorded.
Once configured, the dynamic power control will function correctly. To customise it, return to the e-Charger configuration screen and access ‘configure dynamic control’.
