Shelly meter integration with Trydan

Do you own a Shelly WiFi meter and want to integrate it with our Trydan e-Charger? Below, we provide you with a step-by-step guide to effectively integrate and ensure optimal operation of dynamic power control, whether with the Shelly EM (single-phase model) or the Shelly 3EM (three-phase model). Make the most of energy consumption tracking and control capabilities while charging your electric vehicle with Trydan.

Types of electrical installation

Single-phase installation (Shelly EM)

This model allows you to simultaneously measure your home’s consumption and the power generated by the photovoltaic installation, as it is a bidirectional meter, in case you have one. It is advisable to consult the installation diagrams for the correct meter arrangement.

For the Shelly meter to allow correct operation of dynamic power control, only one clamp will be necessary; if you want Trydan to obtain direct readings from the photovoltaic installation, you will need a second clamp.

You should place the first clamp on the phase of the home’s main line that comes out of the meter, with the arrow pointing in the direction of the current (towards the protection box). Then, you must connect the clamp to the P1+ and P1- pins of the single-phase Shelly.

The second clamp should be placed on the phase of the photovoltaic supply line before the protection box, with the arrow pointing towards it. Connect the clamp to the P2+ and P2- pins of the Shelly EM. This line usually comes from the inverter that converts the direct current from its panels into alternating current to inject it into the grid or use it in your home.

Single-phase Shelly EM

* If the measurements are not correct, make sure the clamp is in the correct orientation to solve the problem. It is advisable not to seal the installation until you ensure that the measurements are correct.
If the values are positive, it indicates home consumption. If there is photovoltaic production and it is generating surplus, the values will appear in negative.

Three-phase installation (Shelly 3 EM)

This model allows us to measure the consumption of each phase in a three-phase installation. If you have a photovoltaic installation, this meter does not allow viewing solar generation in V2C Cloud. However, all load profiles will work correctly.

You must connect each of the phases you want to measure to the corresponding pin for each clamp:

  1. Phase of clamp A to pin VA
  2. Phase of clamp B to pin VB
  3. Phase of clamp C to pin VC

In any case, the NEUTRAL of the installation must be connected to the N pin above the VA pin, and connect the clamps to the main line afterward (downstream) of the meter with the arrows pointing in the direction of the current.

* The Shelly clamps must be connected to each of the phases of the main line from the meter before the junction box and with the arrows pointing to said box.

Step-by-step to configure communication

In this section, we indicate step by step how to configure Shelly to establish communication with Trydan and allow sending measurement data to it.

Local connection to the Shelly meter

How to enable the local network of the Shelly meter?

Once the installation is done, you can configure Shelly communication thanks to the Wi-Fi signal it generates. This process is exactly the same for both Shelly models. You can perform this configuration from a smartphone or a PC, as Shelly generates a local web page similar to that of a conventional router.

To activate the local signal of the device, press the button indicated in the images for 10 seconds.

Check if the network emitted by the meter exists and connect to it. The signal will have a name that includes the word “Shelly” followed by the serial number of the chosen device as shown in the image.

If we select this icon, it allows us to see the IP address assigned to the meter.


How to connect Shelly to my home WiFi network?

Next, access the configuration web page of the Shelly device by entering this address in your web browser: 192.168.33.1

The web page that appears in the first image of the carousel will appear.*

* If you want to check if it is the correct Shelly, you can try pressing the on/off button that appears at the top right. You will hear a sound from the internal switch of the device.

Access the ‘Internet & Security’ section and click ‘WiFi mode – client’. Then activate the checkbox next to the phrase ‘Connect the Shelly device to an existing WiFi Network’.

Subsequently, manually enter the exact name of the WiFi signal to which you are going to connect both the Shelly device and Trydan in the first box, and the password of that signal in the second box. Leave the ‘Set static IP address’ checkbox unchecked and save the configuration.


Identify the IP of the Shelly meter

The IP of the Shelly device can be known in several ways. The main way can be to connect to our router and have it show us the list of connected devices, if we do it this way the IP of Shelly and also that of Trydan must appear. Another way to know it is through other programs, such as the software for PC “Angry IP”, the App for Android “LAN Scan” or the App for Apple “IP Scanner”.

Once you identify the IP of the Shelly meter, it is advisable to write it down to be able to assign the fixed IP in the Shelly application.


How to assign a fixed IP to my Shelly meter?

Trydan does not require a fixed IP to be assigned to the Shelly meter to pair correctly with the device. However, it is advisable to assign a fixed IP to the selected meter to prevent possible communication problems caused by router restarts, weak WiFi signal, or other errors, especially if you have multiple Shelly devices.

To assign it, enter the fixed IP obtained in the previous step in your web browser. Then, access ‘Internet & Security’ again, go to the ‘WiFi mode – client’ section, and check the ‘Set static IP address’ checkbox.

Next, in the ‘IP address’ field, enter the fixed IP, such as 192.168.6.250. In the ‘Gateway’ field, enter the first three blocks of digits the same and the last one changed to 1; using the previous example, it would be 192.168.6.1.

In ‘DNS’, enter 8.8.4.4, and finally, re-enter the password of your WiFi signal in the corresponding place.

Select the home icon to access the screen where you can create a new room by clicking the ‘+’ button. Assign a name to the newly created room and click ‘save’. Later, access the created room and add a Shelly device by pressing the ‘+’ symbol.

To incorporate the device, choose the inclusion option ‘Add via WiFi (AP scan)’, and it should appear automatically. If it does not appear automatically, click ‘add device’, assign a name, and press ‘next’. Finally, choose the room to which you want to add the device and save the configuration.

* If the Shelly device does not appear after scanning the network, select the ‘Add by IP’ button, enter the fixed IP that you have noted as indicated in step 3, and add the device.

Once Shelly is configured, open the V2C Cloud application where you can access your e-Charger to correctly configure dynamic power control.

Access the configuration section of the chosen Trydan charger and choose ‘dynamic power control’.

Select ‘meter’ as the device type and choose ‘Shelly’ in the ‘meter type’ option. If you have assigned a Fixed IP in the Shelly app, make sure to enter the IP of your device also in V2C Cloud.

Finally, select the installation scheme and choose the appropriate type of installation for each situation. Do not forget to save the changes so that the modifications are recorded and dynamic power control works correctly.

Did I integrate correctly?

When Trydan finishes its startup, it connects with Shelly and can now obtain the necessary measurements to perform dynamic power control according to the load profile you have configured.

In the event that Trydan fails to connect with Shelly, it shows the message that appears in the image below. In that case, check your connection and make sure both devices are connected to the same network. If the connection of each device, the configuration, and the communication between them is correct, it will show the measurements.
