More information about the different formats

.rfa – Revit Family File

  • Main use: Revit families (individual components like doors, windows, furniture, etc.).
  • Features: Contains parametric information, materials, geometry, and object behavior.
  • Opens with: Revit.

.ifc – Industry Foundation Classes

  • Main use: Model exchange between different BIM platforms.
  • Open standard: Yes, developed by buildingSMART.
  • Ideal for: Collaboration between different disciplines or software (Revit, Archicad, Tekla, etc.).
  • Opens with: Many BIM programs.

.fbx – Filmbox

  • Main use: Export 3D models for visualization in graphics engines (Unity, Unreal Engine, 3ds Max, etc.).
  • Ideal for: Virtual reality, advanced renders, animations.
  • Does not retain: BIM information such as parameters or advanced materials from Revit.
  • Opens with: Animation and visualization software.
