Do you need to ask for permission to install an electric car charger in a community garage?

Can I install a charger in a community garage to charge my electric car?

This is a very common question among those interested in acquiring an electric car. Naturally, people interested in buying an electric car want to know if they will have issues with their neighbors when it comes to installing a charging point.

The technical instruction complementing the Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation ITC-BT-52 is responsible for regulating the charging infrastructure for such vehicles. According to this instruction, anyone needing to install a charging point in their parking space can do so, as long as they inform the property manager and neighbors. Therefore, we can all install a charging point in a community garage connected to our meter without neighbors being able to refuse.

The ideal chargers for a community garage are wallboxes or wall-mounted charging points, and if there are more cars, dynamic load balancing between wallboxes can be budgeted. There are many models of wall-mounted chargers, and not all cars use the same wallbox.

Do you want to check what type of wallbox or charging point different electric vehicle brands use?

Therefore, no one can prohibit you from installing a charging point in your parking space; there are clearly some requirements, which are to pay for it and connect it to your meter.

Additionally, we remind you that the European Commission plans measures that promote electric mobility. Among these measures is the requirement to install charging points for electric vehicles in all buildings and parking lots, both public and private. The initial deadline set is January 2021, although it is true that the corresponding directives still need to be approved and that the European program establishes measures until 2030, so all of this may be flexible over the next decade.
