Matelec 2018 V2C Electric Vehicle Charging Points

“The penetration of electric cars will depend on manufacturers offering attractive prices and sufficient range.”

V2C is dedicated to the design, manufacturing, and sale of charging solutions for electric vehicles. What importance will electric cars have in Spain in the coming years?

The interest shown by society in electric cars is increasing, and the European Union is already formulating laws aimed at promoting sustainable mobility. Governments are taking positions by creating policies and plans to improve environmental quality, with some even considering banning oil and diesel cars in the coming years.

Undoubtedly, electric cars are the present and future of mobility, both in Spain and around the world. They will solve a significant part of the environmental problems faced by large cities, but we must be aware that there are still some technological challenges to overcome for them to become mainstream in our vehicle fleet.

Their market penetration will depend on manufacturers’ ability to offer users electric cars with attractive prices for buyers and sufficient range for their daily needs.

What role will the effectiveness of charging points play in the development of this type of vehicle?

The concept of refueling changes considerably between an electric car and a combustion engine vehicle. When we talk about an electric car, we need what is called linked charging. A slow, very low-cost charge that is usually done at home or at the workplace and can take between 4 and 8 hours. This can represent a total of 90% of the charges.

Public charging is intended for travel or occasional needs at certain times of the day. Having a public charging infrastructure is essential for the development of electric vehicles; however, it should not be a limitation for a large part of the population to acquire one while having a charging point at home.

What other challenges do electric vehicles and charging points face?

We have very important challenges ahead, such as developing greater battery capacity and reducing costs in the manufacturing of electric cars. Regarding infrastructure, we need charging solutions that allow for bidirectionality and the use of renewable energies in order to close the sustainability loop.
