Aid for the purchase of electric vehicles announced by Teresa Ribera

In “the short term, in the coming weeks” a call for aid for the purchase of electric vehicles will be launched, including buses, motorcycles, bicycles, and electric scooters, said the Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera.

Minister Ribera has indicated that there will also be funding for R&D, as it is a key aspect for the transformation that the automotive industry must face, as well as for the charging infrastructure of electric vehicles.

In an interview with El Periódico de Catalunya reported by EFEverde, Ribera avoided disclosing the amount of these funds, although she recalled that for this year they have a budget of 50 million, which they are trying to increase “to the maximum”.

In her opinion, people “must lose their fear” of electric cars, for which continuous aid is planned.

In this regard, she highlighted, “because it has not come to light and it is going to go very well for us”, that the Environment Ministers of the European Union have agreed to create a bonus for countries where the penetration of electric vehicles is below the community average.

“Spain is lagging behind in the sale of electric cars along with the former Eastern countries, and therefore we will be beneficiaries of that financial support”, she stated.
However, according to the minister, the approach needs to be much “more ambitious and committed”, which is why she urged vehicle manufacturers to, just like in Germany and France, make a “significant contribution to subsidies” in Spain.

From the draft of the climate change law from her Ministry, which proposes a ban on the sale of vehicles that emit CO2 by 2040 and their circulation by 2050, she rejected that it is “a mere gesture”.

Guidelines are provided so that the automotive industry has the capacity for anticipation and direction for its transformation within a 22-year timeframe, because it is “very difficult to think of a more lenient horizon”, she concluded.
