Cost of charging an electric car at home.

How much can it cost to charge an electric car?

The cost of charging an electric car at home depends on two factors: the battery capacity of the electric car and the rate we have contracted.

One of the most frequently asked questions by end consumers when deciding what type of car to buy (electric car, gasoline car, hybrid car) is undoubtedly the cost of charging an electric car at home.

-Electric Vehicle Rate.

Users who purchase an electric car can contract a special rate called Electric Vehicle Rate (2.0 DHS), previously known as Super Valley Rate. What is the price per kilowatt with this rate? It depends on the time of day when users charge their electric car.

Thus, the cost of charging a car at home according to the contracted rate and the time of charging would be as follows:

-From 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM. This period is the most expensive, it is the peak period (P1) and includes a total of 10 hours.

-From 11:00 PM to 1:00 AM and from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This period has an intermediate price, it is the valley period (P2) and includes a total of 8 hours.

-From 1:00 AM to 7:00 AM. This is the cheapest period to charge the electric car. It is the super valley period (P3) and includes a total of 6 hours.

According to data from Red Eléctrica de España, during peak hours the price per kilowatt hour is €0.13/kWh, during the super valley period it is €0.064/kWh, and during the valley period it is €0.07/kWh. To know how much a full battery charge would cost, users must multiply the price of each €/kWh by the number of kWh that the electric car’s battery has.

Let’s see an example of the cost of charging an electric car at home.

Electric car model: Kia Soul EV

Battery: 27 kWh

Price for a full battery charge during nighttime: €1.7.

In the case of the Soul EV, a charge allows you to travel approximately 155 km, so you would spend only €1.20/100km.

As you already know, another option is charging the car in public spaces. You can read this article about how much it costs to charge an electric car in public.
