Innolith develops the world’s first 1000Wh/kg battery

Innolith AG is the world leader in inorganic rechargeable battery technology. The company is based in Basel, Switzerland, and. claims to have made a significant breakthrough of 1000 Wh/kg in batteries with unprecedented levels of safety, durability, power, and now, energy.

The electric vehicle revolution is currently hindered by the limitations of available batteries.“, explains Sergey Buchin, CEO of Innolith AG.  “Consumers want adequate range with a single charge in an affordable electric vehicle. and the assurance that it won’t catch fire.  The Innolith Energy Battery is the latest technology that can potentially meet all these needs“.

Yesterday, this company announced that it is developing the world’s first rechargeable 1000 Wh/kg battery. The new battery would be capable of powering an electric vehicle for over 1000 km on a single charge.

A big leap

It’s a big leap“, said Innolith’s president, Alan Greenshields, in an interview with The Verge. And indeed, the leap is significant. To better understand it, we can compare it to the batteries used by Tesla in its Model 3. The so-called 2170 cells are estimated at 250. Wh/kg, which the company plans to increase to 330 Wh/kg in the future.

How will they do it and what are the benefits of the Energy Battery?

The company has replaced the highly flammable organic solvent used in lithium-ion batteries. with a more stable and less flammable inorganic substance.

This battery will be the first non-flammable lithium-based battery for use in electric vehicles. It uses a non-flammable inorganic electrolyte, unlike conventional EV batteries that use a flammable organic electrolyte. The shift to non-flammable batteries eliminates the primary cause of battery fires. that have affected electric vehicle manufacturers.

Greenshields described it:

We took out the organic materials and replaced them with inorganic or basically saline materials, and that does two things for you. One is that it eliminates the fire risk, so of course, there’s nothing to burn. And the second part is that you’ve also gotten rid of the most reactive components of the system, which makes it easier to build a battery where you can store a lot of energy without it becoming unstable“.

The absence of organic materials, a key aspect of Innolith’s battery technology, eliminates the critical source of safety risk and chemical instability in high-energy batteries. Everything was set in motion in 2018 from an R&D perspective, with several extraordinary advancements“, explained Greenshields.

The other benefits of the Innolith Energy Battery would be cost reduction due to.Avoiding exotic and expensive materials combined with the high energy density of the system.

Energy Battery Production

Innolith will begin pilot production in Germany, followed by licensing partnerships with major battery and automotive companies. Greenshields estimates that full production is 3 to 5 years away.

Intellectual Property Protection

Innolith has a pending patent for the key inventions of the battery and also keeps the mechanism of the cell chemistry secret.
